Barry Mendel, CFA®
Barry founded the company in 1989 and is currently the President of Mendel Money Management. His passion for the capital markets is apparent. Growing up in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, he watched his father follow the stock market and make his own investment decisions.
After graduating from Mather High School in 1968, he went to University of Illinois, Urbana where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration in 1972. He joined the ΑΕΠ fraternity and was actively involved as Treasurer and Secretary. To this day, he still maintains a strong connection with many of his friends from college and his fraternity.
Upon graduation, Barry moved out west to attend California State University, San Francisco. There he had the opportunity to study under some professors who had received their PhD’s from Stanford and University of California at Berkeley. In 1974, he received his M.B.A. in Finance. From 1973 to 1978, he was a securities analyst with the Commonwealth Edison Company. There he was on a team of analysts responsible for managing the company’s pension fund. He spent time specializing in the energy, financial, metals, and capital goods sectors.
From 1978 to 1979, Barry was an Investment Counselor with Westwood Management, specializing in managing client funds on a discretionary basis. Prior to forming MMM, he was an Associate Portfolio Manager with the Institutional Capital Corporation for 10 years, working for the person who managed the Sears pension plan. At that time, they managed $1.2 billion for 10 large corporate pension plans.
Barry currently serves as a director of the Indian Peaks Brewing Company, the maker of Left Hand Beer, and Northbrook Junior League Baseball. He is an avid golfer, concert goer, and stills plays softball twice a week in the summer.
Liz joined Mendel Money Management in early 2002. She holds a B.A. degree in psychology from Lake Forest College (1974) and an M.S.W. degree from the University of Illinois/Jane Addams Graduate School (1977). She started her career as a social worker for Lyons Township from 1977-1978 and then retired to focus on raising her family of three children.
In 2000, she rejoined the workforce as a sales assistant to become familiar with trading techniques, asset allocation models, and client services at Prudential Securities and continued her career as a junior broker with a large internal partnership after passing her Series 7, 63, and 65. The group was recruited to move to First Union Securities (now known as Wells Fargo Advisors), where she ran the group’s Profit Formula. She continued her education with investment courses at Northwestern University, as well as with the CFA® Society of Chicago.
After joining Mendel Money Management, she went on to pass her Life and Health Insurance licensing test. In her leisure time, Liz enjoys tennis, golf, and traveling.
Bradley Mendel, EA, MSPA
Brad joined Mendel Money Management in 2013. He earned a B.A. in Computer Science from Boston University. After graduating in 2004, he obtained Microsoft certifications and consulted with small to medium-sized business on their Information Technology infrastructure for two years.
Seeking a career change, one of his former clients offered him a job as an actuary at Shore Tompkins Actuarial Resources. There he consulted small businesses owners on the design and administration of their defined contribution and defined benefit plans.
In 2012, Brad passed his final actuarial exam and became an Enrolled Actuary (“EA”). Brad is currently working towards his M.B.A. in Finance at Kellogg School of Management and passed CFA® Level 1 in 2014. He has a passion for cooking, golfing, and photography.
